Alamy CO2 reduction programme
17th May 2005
In 2004 Alamy was responsible for the release of around 260 tonnes of CO2 and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere through the following activities:
Flights - 104 tonnes of CO2
Electricity - 156 tonnes of CO21
To counter the effects of these emissions Alamy have contributed funds to Climate Care, a UK-based organisation that runs projects around the world to 'offset' CO2 emissions. Climate Care uses contributed funds to help remove CO2 from the atmosphere, to develop renewable energy solutions and promote energy efficiency projects. For more information about CO2 offsets and how they work, please see www.climatecare.org2.
In 2005 Alamy will be purchasing electricity from renewable energy sources where possible, but as an expanding business it is likely that its overall greenhouse gas emissions will increase. The goal for 2005 is to make Alamy 'climate neutral'. This means that for every tonne of C02 Alamy emits it will either consume that energy from a renewable source or, in cases where that is not possible such as commercial airline flights, it will offset its carbon emissions with the help of organisations like Climate Care.
Alamy takes its responsibility for the environment seriously. Global climate is changing faster than it has ever done in the last 10,000 years, due mainly to human influence. Climate change is the most significant environmental challenge facing society this century and concerted action is needed to significantly reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. Alamy aims to play its part.
