Alamy is working in partnership with Cool Earth, a charity that protects endangered rainforests to combat global warming, protect eco systems and provide sustainable jobs for local people.

Our sponsorship has secured 172 acres of mature rainforest in the Cutivireni Project in Peru – on the edge of an area of massive deforestation where clearance of mature rainforest is destroying a critical carbon store and ecosystem resource.

It means we are protecting around 7,568 mature trees, 32,680 saplings, six endangered species of animal, 322 types of plant and over 11,000 species of insect and worm as well as saving over 44,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide. Overall, the project that Alamy supports will protect almost eight million tonnes of CO2 - equivalent to the annual carbon emissions of a city the size of Oxford [700,000].

The sponsorship also includes purchasing classroom equipment, solar powered internet and helping to ensure the Ashaninka people are fairly compensated for the preservation of a vital and irreplaceable ecosystem.

Lighting:

Alamy set up the Suryakiran project to provide eco-friendly solar powered lighting for poor families in the community near our offices in Kerala, India where children still have to study using kerosene lamps. So far we have distributed 75 lamps. The next phase of the project is to provide another 40 solar lamps, using LED instead of CFL lighting, which is four times more efficient.

Reducing energy consumption:

Our new sales office in the US will be equipped with video conferencing technology to reduce the need for travel between offices. Other initiatives in our UK headquarters include investment in new energy efficient printers and photocopiers. Future plans include investing in virtual server technology to reduce the number of servers needed to run our operations and an investigation into switching to a low energy office lighting scheme. Green Teams operate in both our India and UK offices to look at ways of reducing waste and saving electricity.
