The Green Team - Alamy India
Our Green Club was formed in August 2008 by staff members keen to help reduce waste and energy consumption. Through education and awareness, we aim to promote green practices in our offices and throughout Technopark here in Trivandrum, Kerala. Activities so far:- Recycling - 2009 has been declared the Year of Recycling. We have begun in a small way by installing recycling bins and are in discussions to get recyclable material collected from Alamy and other companies on Technopark. We hope to get all 40 plus companies involved, making it a feasible commercial venture for recycling organisations. We’re also encouraging community involvement by urging employees to take the recycling habit home with them.
- Resources - We’ve been cutting down on paper use by printing less or printing on both sides and re-using paper to make notebooks. All staff receive training on saving resources such as power and water and reducing food waste. A lot of opportunities remain unexplored and we're hoping to tap into those in the near future.
- Green stationery and supplies - We will shortly be sourcing stationery and general office supplies that are primarily made of re-used / recycled / biodegradable material. This will reduce the cost as well as the environmental impact of ordering office supplies made of plastic or other non-bio-degradable materials. Active campaigning will soon see other companies converting to green supplies over a period of time.
- New office - The new extension to Alamy's office in Trivandrum has been designed with energy efficiency in mind. It includes double-glazed windows, CFL lighting and improved space management. This has attracted a lot of positive attention from other companies, many of whom have followed suit and made similar investments.
- Saplings - We are also in the process of acquiring saplings to grow in the office. These plants will be chosen for their high CO2 absorption and O2 generating capabilities.
