A woman farmer walking on the roadside as a road infrastructure is being developed in a remote area within Kapuas Hulu regency, West Kalimantan province, Indonesia. Archival photo (2012). In remote Kalimantan, local communities have been relying on rivers and walking pathways for mobility and transportation for decades. The new road construction will connect the cities of Melak (East Kalimantan province) and Putussibau (West Kalimantan province) on its longest span, and is expected to cut at least a half of traditional travel time between all of the connected cities and villages.
