DB Class 101 with IC2213 from Stralsund Hbf on its way to Stuttgart Hbf, via Hamburg, Bremen, Osnabrück, Münster, Köln and Koblenz. InterCity (commonly abbreviated IC on timetables and tickets) is a classification applied to high quality long-distance passenger train services in Europe. Such trains (in contrast to regional, local, or commuter trains) generally call at major stations only. The DB Class 101 is a class of three-phase electric locomotives built by Adtranz and operated by DB Fernverkehr in Germany. 145 locomotives were built between 1996 and 1999 to replace the 30-year old and aging Class 103 as the flagship of the DB AG, primiarily hauling Intercity services. This class encompasses the latest generation of locomotives of the DB. The Wanne-Eickel–Hamburg railway KBS385 is the shortest railway link between the Ruhr and the Hamburg Metropolitan Region and hence one of the most important railway lines in northwest Germany. It links the cities of Münster (Westfalen), Osnabrück and Bremen. It was built between 1870 and 1874 by the Cologne-Minden Railway Company (CME) based in Wanne-Eickel, and branched off their main (Cologne-)Deutz–Minden route as part of the Hamburg-Venlo railway. Today it is an electrified main line which has a minimum of two tracks throughout. Parts of the route are equipped with Linienzugbeeinflussung train control which enables speeds of up to 200 km/h to be attained.
