Muscle wasting. Right leg of a 73-year-old man with atrophy (wasting) of the calf muscles. These muscles, which extend from the knee to the ankle, have shrunk in size following a fracture of the femur (thigh bone) sustained in a road traffic accident. The accident caused a sciatic palsy, a paralysis of the sciatic nerve that runs down the back of the thigh. The wasting of the muscles occurred because the patient was unable to move his lower leg, and exercise the muscles, due to the paralysis.
