Wood cut engraving from the London Illustrated News of 11th October 1856 depicting the Steam Clipper Istamboul Built in Hartlepool by Pyle of Sunderland The ship of 1470 tons was equipped with both sails and a steam powered screw This type of ship saw the demise of the fast clippers powered only by sail such as The Cutty Sark as the combination of sail and steam power obviated the well known delay and uncertainty caused by lack of wind However the combination was not very successful as the screw impeded the sailing abilities of the ship and the weak engine meant that the ship was neither good as a sailing or powered vessel The Australian Auxiliary Steam Clipper Co Ltd was wound up after only two voyages between England and Australia
