The Carnival of Venice (Carnevale di Venezia) is held annually in Venice, Italy. Masks were worn to hide not only the wearer's identity but also the social status. Venice is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Described as being one of Europe's most romantic cities it is a major tourist attraction. It is situated in the marshy Venetian Lagoon along the Adriatic Sea and it stretches across 117 small islands. In the Middle Ages and Renaissance, Venice was a very important commercial center. Silk, grains, spice and art were all traded.
