This photograph shows one of two depictions of Kircher's magic lantern, also called smicroscopium parastaticum. These illustrations appeared in the 2nd edition of Ars Magna Lucis et Umbrae. Similar to the laterna magica, the smicroscopium parastaticum also projected images on the wall. Athanius Kircher was a German Jesuit and polymath.
