An old engraving of a Daniel Gooch design, the ‘Iron Duke’ class, for the Great Western railway in England, UK 1846. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. Sir Daniel Gooch, (1816–1889) was an English railway locomotive and transatlantic cable engineer. He was the first Superintendent of Locomotive Engines on the GWR from 1837 to 1864 and its chairman from 1865 to 1889. The Iron Duke class entered service between 1847 and 1855. These engines originally burnt coke but later coal was used. The locos were extremely fast and had top speed of nearly 80 mph.
