The monument was created after an offer of a giant marble monolith by a group of industrialists from Cararra in 1927, as a dedication to Mussolini. The architectural project was by Italian architect and engineer Costantino Costantini (1904-1982), and bears the inscription MVSSOLINI DVX (Mussolini, the Leader), it weighs an estimated 300 tonnes, and stands 17.5 metres tall, and was inaugurated on 4 November 1932.
