BEACH BUMS ARE VOLLEYBALL COOL Beach Volleyball Bikini Bottom Boost. . . . Contestants at the recent FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships in Poland have received backing following criticism that showing sponsorship logos on the posterior of their sportswear is the thin end of the wedge . . . in more ways than bum. As the biannual tournament took place at the 9000 capacity Stare Jablonki’s stadium along the picturesque shores of Lake Mazury, the game got behind its leading ladies' decision to display their mix of: close fist, open hand, one and two finger secret hand-signs - decked in the, now de rigueur, two piece bikini uniforms. Since 1999 when the Federation of International Volleyball (FIVB) standardized official required beach volleyball uniform as a one-piece swimsuit - with shorts as an alternative - opinion on the sports' appropriate apparel has divided into two camps . . . The two-piece bikini brigade advocate its practical merits - especially as the sport is most often contested on sand in hot summer conditions. But opponents are anal about their belief that the bikini draws attention away from the competition itself. They point towards a study during the 2004 Summer Olympic Games which found that 17 percent of camera angles focused on the buttock area of volleyball players.
