Diane Blood with sons Liam, four, and Joel, 16-months, signs birth certificates bearing the name of their father, outside Sheffield District Register Office, after Mrs Blood won her long legal battle to have her late partner Stephen, who died in 1995, legally recognised on the documents. The Human Fertilisation and Embryology (Deceased Fathers) Act 2003, which came into force today, gives mothers like Mrs Blood, whose children were conceived after their fathers' deaths, a six-month window in which to re-register their children's births if they now wish to name the deceased parent on the relevant birth certificate.
