This is the Fauld mine, owned by British Gypsum in Staffordshire, near to the historic town of Tutbury. At the time that these images were taken the mine extended some 6.5km under the surface at an average depth of 300 feet. Prior to the mining of the gypsum, alabaster was the main product dug from the mine. The mine entrance sits to one side of the Fauld Crater, the site of the UKs largest ever explosion back in 1944. Gypsum is used extensively in the building trade for amongst other things plaster and plaster board.
