The picturesque village of Guadalupe lies in the province of Cáceres, at the heart of the remote Sierra de Guadalupe. It is synonymous with the Monasterio de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, one of the most important places of pilgrimage in the Catholic world, which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. The monastery was founded in the 14th century on the site where a shepherd had discovered an effigy of the Virgin Mary said to have been carved by St Luke.
