RM2D8M6WA–An old engraving of a large Cornish beam engine used in mining in the 1800s. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. Here it powers the pumps that kept excess water out of the mineshaft (right). This type of steam engine was developed in Cornwall, England, UK. It uses steam at a higher pressure than the earlier atmospheric ones designed by Thomas Newcomen and then James Watt. The engines were also used for winching materials into and out of the mine. Many of these efficient engines (using an external condenser) were erected by the firm of Boulton and Watt in Cornwall.

The engine was mainly used to pump excess water out of mines. A Cornish engine is a type of steam engine developed in Cornwall, England, UK. It is a beam engine that uses steam at a higher pressure than the earlier atmospheric beam engines designed by Thomas Newcomen and then James Watt. The engines were also used for winching materials into and out of the mine and for powering on-site ore stamping machinery to extract metals like copper and tin from the ore.

John Blenkinsop (1783–1831) was an English mining engineer and an inventor of steam locomotives, who designed the first practical railway locomotive. In the early nineteenth century, attempts were being made to employ steam power for haulage. In 1811 Blenkinsop patented a rack and pinion system at the side of the track for a locomotive. His engine, weighing five tons, regularly hauled a payload of ninety tons of coal over three miles from the Middleton Colliery, Middletown to Leeds, Yorkshire, England, UK.

RM2D8M6WD–An old engraving of a John Smeaton Cornish boiler used in mining in the 1800s. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. The simplest form of flued boiler was Richard Trevithick's ‘high-pressure’ Cornish boiler. This is a long horizontal cylinder with a single large flue containing the fire. Cornish boilers had curved surfaces, better to resist the pressure and less likelihood of local overheating. John Smeaton (1724 –1792) was an English civil engineer.
