From the early 17th century dragoons were employed as conventional cavalry and trained for combat with swords or spears and firearms whilst still on horseback . The name dragoon is derived from a type of firearm, called a dragon, which was a handgun version of a blunderbuss. The modern French Army retains three dragoon regiments of the original 32 of WWI.

RME12JKT–Feb. 24, 2012 - Armourer to the Royal Opera House. Custodian of the famous arms collection at Covent Garden is Cyril Brasher, 58-year old former army and Colonial Service officer. He is holding the blunderbuss, which weighs 18 lbs and has a muzzle 1¾ wide. On the wall behind is a Danish XVIII century pistol, and above it are seven real officers swords, topped by a Cossack with ivory hilt. Above these are various theatrical swords and the famous Lohengrin sword.
