1942, historical, a little boy, a cub scout with special shoes on and holding a walking stick standing in the courty outside the wards at the Queen Mary's Hospital for Children at Carshalton, near London, England, UK. Built in 1908 as the Southern Hospital, it became a children's infirmary in 1909 and renamed after a visit by Queen Mary in 1915. It was the most heavily bombed hospital in the greater London area, with the first attack in 1940. The new threats posed by the VI and V2 rockets, saw total evacuation take place in July 1944 with children taken to other locations in England and Wales. Scouting began in 1908, after British Army Officer General Robert Baden-Powell held an experimental camp on Brownsea Island, Poole Harbour, the previous summer. Around 20 boys attended and were taught a range of outdoor skills, including tracking, firelighting, making shelters out of branches, knotting, cooking, health and sanitation, life-saving and First Aid. In 1914 Young Scouts or Wolf Cubs were launched for boys aged nine. At the age of 12, they could become boy scouts.
