RM2GJ0HAC–Pierre Levegh, French Veteran driver who was killed in his Mercedes after the disaster which claimed 84 lives in the early stages of the 24-hour Le Mans race, France. The Mercedes smashed at 120 miles an hour into a British car and exploded like a bomb. Engine and front axle scythed through the packed crowd watching the race. Some were decapitated, others terribly burned by blazing petrol. Besides the 84 dead, 100 people were injured. Levegh was dead when pulled from the wreckage of this car. RM2BW40HF–The inquest open at Battersea Coroners Court on the 10 victims of the Battersea train smash. The hearing was adjourned until the inquiry is completed, as a cause of the disaster was stated by Mr William Bishop, chief solicitor to the Southern Railway to be a little bit wrapped in mystery. RM2BW35G0–It is reported that the giant American dirigible Akron crashed into the sea twenty miles off the New Jersey coast with a crew of 77 men aboard , including Rear Admiral William A Moffett , Chief of the bureau of Aeronautics of the US Navy . The German ship Phoebus rushed to the scene of the disaster and is reported to have picked up four survivors . RM2GC39G4–Aberfan, Wales: Britian's Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh lay a wreath upon the grave where 81 children and 1 adult were buried on Thursday; When the royal couple visited this disaster village today, October 29. Yet Andy Devine, amiable screen comedian, had to do it for a new film, now being produced in Hollywood.
