RM2AF87PM–Vast fields of sugarcane spreading to the edge of the Pacific Ocean are shown in this 1981 aerial photograph of Kauai Island in Hawaii, USA. Unfortunately, the last producer of sugarcane on that island made its final harvest in 2009 and shut down after 120 years in business there. Once the mainstay of Hawaii's economy, the state's sugarcane industry finally came to an end when another longtime producer ended its operations on Maui Island in 2016. The thousands of sugarcane acres in Hawaii are being converted for other agricultural products and for residential and holiday resort developments.
