When the Luxi County Special Education School was established in 1997, Liu Xiaoqing, then a normal university graduate, applied for a post there without hesitation. Working as a special education teacher has been challenging, as Liu's students need far more attention than their peers without physical or mental disabilities. But Liu stayed on her post for 22 years helping her students improve

Working as a special education teacher has been challenging, as Liu's students need far more attention than their peers without physical or mental disabilities. But Liu stayed on her post for 22 years helping her students improve with various types of trainings. So far, more than 100 children with disabilities have benefited from Liu's teaching expertise and patience. "None of my students went to a top university nor became a celebrity of some sort, " says Liu, popularly known as "Mother Liu" among the students. "My achievement lies in their recovery of confidence in life when they no longer feel inferior to others." (Xinhua/Zhou Mi)
