As far back as 1686, the property that is now Bryant Park has been designated as public property. At one point, the Crystal Palace Exhibition for the 1853 54 World's Fair was on the site. Now, it boasts the main branch of the New York Public Library system, a free skating pond in the winter, and numerous free musical and stage events during the summer.
