Battlefield MemorialOne of the smaller statues in the park, but one of the most moving I think. The helmet and identification tags signify the fallen soldier, their name, never to be forgotten. The inverted rifle with bayonet signals a time for prayer, a break in the action to pay tribute to a fallen comrade. The combat boots represent the final march of the last battle.During the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, the Battlefield Memorial attracted popular attention, with units erecting them to pay tribute to their fallen comrades. Since they could not attend the funerals of their fellow soldiers, some units honored their fallen comrades with a Battlefield Memorial. The Fallen Soldier Battlefield Memorial has come to be used as a poignant reminder of the cost of war.© John W.
