A 19th century dictionary entry explaining the old military defensive man trap technique known as a Trous-de-loup / Trou de loup, commonly referred to as killing pits or wolf pits. In the East they are known as Tiger pits and were known in Roman times as lilies. They were also used in the past for hunting purposes and to catch wild animals. The pointed stake in the centre was known as a punji stick or post. They were often concealed by flooding or covering with a light wicker top covered in leaves.
