A Black Bristle Bracket mushroom, (Phellinus nigricans}, with a dusting of snow, growing through the moss on the base of a red birch tree, (Betula occidentalis), near the Kootenai River, in Troy, Montana. P. nigricans is sometimes grouped in the Phellinus igniarius complex, but is a distict species from P. igniarius sensu stricto.
