A month after the Hamas attack on Kibbutz Nir Oz in southern Israel, the site remains a symbol of the devastation caused by violence. The attack, which took place on October 7, 2023, left 140 people dead, including 100 residents of the kibbutz. Another 300 residents were injured. The attack was the deadliest in the history of the kibbutz, which was founded in 1948. Today, the kibbutz is a desolate place. The houses are in ruins, the fields are abandoned and the silence is overwhelming. The air is filled with a smell of burning and putrefaction. The smell of smoke mixes with the smell of burnt flesh and blood. In the midst of this scene of devastation, a group of archaeologists works to recover the charred remains of the people who died in the attack. Archaeologists hope to identify all the victims and return their remains to their families. (Photo by Israel Fuguemann / SOPA Images/Sipa USA)
