A male wood duck in eclipse plumage, which is much more drab compared to its appearance before breeding. The wood duck sheds its feathers over the weeks after breeding, developing the drabber plumage, making it less noticeable to predators. Before the next breeding season, it will undergo a second molt, back into its breeding plumage.
