A windcatcher, Badgir or (بادگیر in Farsi is a traditional Persian architectural device for many centuries used to create natural ventilation in buildings. Persian merchants who settled in Dubai, in old Trucial States days, built many of these traditional wind-catchers on the roofs of their houses in the `Persian merchant`s quarter` or the Bastikia. In former times there were as many as one hundred badgirs but most of them were destroyed when the houses were demolished to make way for new developments and infrastructure.
