German sword makers were invited to this region in the late 1600's and assisted with the setting up of facilities for the manufacture of steel swords. At Allensford there is evidence of their activity in the form of an adit or mine entrance, the remains of a kiln thought to the used in the processing of the ore, and the remains of an old furnace. The finishing of the blades was carried out elsewhere, possibly at a works in Shotley Bridge. See also DYKYHK DYKMYT DYKN05 DYKN09 DYKN0N
