An old 1898 portrait of former Iowa politician and Superintendent of publications (State Superintendent of Public Instruction) R C Barrett who was born in Waverly, Bremer County, Iowa, his career began in farming before turning to education as a teacher / instructor. He served as president of the Northern Iowa Superintendents (for 12 years) and became president of the Northern Iowa Superintendents' and Teachers' Association and held a number of similar positions in education. He began the educational journal Mitchell County Teacher and was editor of another named The Iowa Teacher
