An old engraving of the rioting between Hindus and Muslims in Bombay (Mumbai), India in 1893. It is from a Victorian history book of c.1900. In August 1893, the first riot erupted after music was played at a Hindu Temple. Some contemporary reports suggested that 75 people were killed. The army had to be summoned to end it. The reclaiming of public places with celebratory festivals, discord over cow slaughter, disputes over playing of music near religious places, the building of prayer halls, mosques, temples and tombs caused divisions among the Hindus and Muslims and sparked violence.
