Annals of medical history . FiO. 9. Two views of the mandible of a three-toed horse, MerycbippuS campestris, from the Miocene, aboutone and one-half million yean old. The figures show in the absorbed alveolar margins pathological processessimilar to alveolar pyorrhea of the present day. A left premolar shows evidences of caries, and the swelling inthe left ramus, so evident in the right-hand figure, is indicative of a fistula, possibly indicating the presence ofactinomycosis in the early stages.
