New Zealand tennis player, Anthony Frederick Wilding (1883 - 1915), Wimbledon Mens Champion in 1910, 1911, 1912 and 1913 pictured early in his career at the age of 22 being congratulated after defeating American, W. J. Clothier at Wimbledon in 1905, despite losing the first two sets. He was eventually beaten in the quarter finals by the 37 year old Arthur Gore. Tall, handsome, athletic and genial, Wilding became a hugely popular sporting star. After his 1913 championship win, ladies reported fainted due to the excitement and rush of the crowd. His championship run came to an end in 1914 when he was beaten by Australian, Norman. Brookes in three straight sets. Wilding died near Neuve Chapelle, France on 9 May 1915 while fighting in the Battle of Aubers Ridge.
