It ended when Chicago born Napoleon Greene, 21. a coloured airman from the nearby American air base at Manston. shot himself, before greene died in front of hundreds of holiday makers at the crowded seaside resort he killed three men and wounded nine other people, including two English girls. He raided the armory, swept offices and roads with a hail of bullets, forced a sergeant at gun point to drive him towards broad-stairs and refused to surrender when trapped on the beach.
