Barred door at the end of a concrete trench leading to one of the remaining buildings at Brownstone Emergency Gun Battery. The gun battery dates from 1942. It originally had two 6 inch naval guns from a WW1 battleship. They could fire a shell some 14 miles. The battery was built as a defence for Dartmouth and Start Bay and included Slapton and Blackpool Sands, possible German invasion beaches. They were also defence agoinst German E Boats raiding Dartmouth.
