Coastguard and police attend a fall from Beachy Head cliffs on the South coast of East Sussex. The cliffs, 160 metres at their highest point, hold a macabre attraction for those looking to end their lives in this way. Every year an average of 20 people, travelling from all over the UK and further afield, leap from this sheer cliff face onto the rocks or beach below. Such horrifying figures have resulted in a 24 hour volunteer chaplaincy service patrolling the area hoping to save those desperate souls arriving here for just such a purpose. Many local Taxi companies, pubs and local people are so familiar with these incidents, a system of reporting individuals in the vicinity of the cliff edge is in place with the hope of averting more tragedies.
