In a country with a large territory and huge population like China, the railway system has to be the best and most realistic transportation to support the ever-fast economic development. Traveling by train in China used to be notorious adventures for both passengers and cargoes. Though covering most major regions in the country, the train service was blamed for its snail speed and frequent delays. It used to take more than a couple of days to travel from the capital of Beijing to Guangzhou, China s economic hub in the south. The train network has undertaken six major upgrades since the 1990s to cut short the travel time. China now operates a high-speed railway network with a combined length totaling 7, 531 kilometers, the world s longest. With the help of modern transportation technology, Chinese bullet trains now travel at speeds as fast as 350 kilometers per hour. Early this month, a CRH-380A train hit an operating speed record of 486.1 kilometers per hour on a test run on the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway. It will soon be a dream-come-true for train passengers to make a premium round trip between Beijing and Guangzhou within a day. Since 2003, China has signed agreements for cooperation on rail with more than 30 countries, including the United States, Russia, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Poland and India. To smooth cargo flows in the region, it also agreed to render its help to improve the railway systems in neighboring country like Thailand and Laos.
