Biological control research. Biologist removing Encarsia formosa insects from plant leaves. E. formosa are aphid-like parasites of whitefly, a destructive pest that feeds on the underside of plant leaves. E. formosa lay their eggs in whitefly nymphs. The eggs hatch and develop inside the nymphs, eventually killing them. E. formosa can be used to control whiteflies without the need for chemical pesticides. This research was performed for the United States Department of Agriculture.
