Black Death in Europe, 14th century. Map of Europe showing the spread of the Black Death. Darkening pink colours indicate the year the plague reached that area, from lightest to darkest: 1347 (lower right), 1348, 1349, 1350, 1351, and 1352 (upper right). Green areas were unaffected, while beige areas have no reliable data. Black Death outbreaks affected Europe from the 1340s to the 1700s. It is thought to have been bubonic plague, caused by the Yersinia pestis bacterium, and spread by fleas on rats. Millions died across Europe. This map includes mountain ranges and rivers.
