More information:
Blood clot, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Red blood cells (erythrocytes) are trapped within a fibrin protein mesh (light pink). The fibrin mesh is formed in response to chemicals secreted by platelets (bright pink), fragments of white blood cells. Clots are formed in response to cardiovascular disease or injuries to blood vessels.

Platelets are fragments of white blood cells that under normal circumstances are small and biconcave in form. However, if there is a break in the surface of a blood vessel the platelets come into contact with molecules they are not used to and become activated. Platelets are blood cell fragments that play an essential role in blood clotting and wound repair, and can also activate certain immune responses. They are formed in the red bone marrow, lungs, and spleen by fragmentation of very large cells known as megakaryocytes. Platelets in the blood are small oval disks and are termed non-activated platelets or thrombocytes. They are the body's first line of defence against excessive blood loss. The production of fibrin is triggered by cells called platelets, activated when a blood vessel is damaged. The fibrin binds the various blood cells together, forming a solid structure called a blood clot. A blood clot is a normal response, preventing an excessive loss of blood. However, inappropriate clotting is a major cause of heart attacks and strokes. Magnification x 2000 at 10cm wide.
