The Indian Botanical Gardens situated in Shibpur, Howrah near Kolkata is 109 hectares in area. Previously it was known as Royal Botanis Garden. It has a wide variety rare plants roughly 1700. It is also famous for its enormous collections of orchids, bamboos, palms, and plants of the screw pine genus (Pandanus). The best-known landmark of the garden is an enormous banyan tree that is more than 300 m (1, 000 feet) in circumference and thought to be two centuries old.
