More information:

Bowlingual dog translator. Matsumi Suzuki, of the Japan Acoustic Lab, working on the development of the dog-to-human translator Bowlingual. This device was developed by the Japanese toy company Tokara and launched in 2002. The device analyses the dog's bark (transmitted from a wireless microphone attached to the dog) and places it in one of six emotional categories: happy, sad, frustrated, guarded, assertive, and needy. The pet owner's handheld device then displays phrases representing that emotion.
