Brigadier-General Alban Randell Crofton Atkins (1870-1926), Director of Supplies and Transport in 1917. He received his first commission in 1889 and transferred from the Royal Marine Light Infantry to the Army Service Corps five years later. He saw considerable active service in West Africa in the Ashanti War and Adjutant of the Army Service Corps during the South African (Boer) War. He held several staff appointments at the Headquarters of the Army and was at one time Chief Instructor at the Army Service Corps Training Establishment. When war broke out in 1914, he went to France as Assistant Director of Transport and returned to the War Office early in 1915 as Deputy Director of Supplies and Transport being appointed director in March 1916.
