Christianshavn (literally, "Harbour of the Christian King") is a neighborhood in Copenhagen, Denmark. It is part of the Indre By district and is situated on several artificial islands between the islands of Zealand and Amager, and separated from the rest of the city center by the inner harbour. It was founded in the early 17th century by Christian IV as part of his expansion of Copenhagen's fortifications. It was originally designed as an independent and privileged market city, inspired by Dutch cities, but was soon incorporated into Copenhagen. Dominated by canals, it is the part of Copenhagen with the most nautical atmosphere.
