Founded in 1866, the American University of Beirut bases its educational philosophy, standards, and practices on the American liberal arts model of higher education. A teaching-centered research university, AUB has around 700 instructional faculty and a student body of around 8, 000 students. The University encourages freedom of thought and expression and seeks to graduate men and women committed to creative and critical thinking, life-long learning, personal integrity, civic responsibility, and leadership. Beirut is a student-friendly city, where street crime is practically nil in comparison with major Western cities. Even with sporadic political tensions that take place, our AUB community have not been deterred or intimidated, in carrying out their normal everyday lives. On campus, AUB is prepared in the case of an emergency where an emergency response plan has been set up, with a supporting protocol for students. For more information about security on campus, please visit the Office of Protection. Also check out the website of Emergency Preparedness.
