Caricature comparing homeopathy and allopathy (mainstream medicine), 1800s. "Schism in the medical profession: Allopathy v. Homeopathy. Showing Dr. Allopath and Dr. Homeopath, the rival doctors." The German physician Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843) developed homeopathy in 1796, which was based on his doctrine that "like cures like": a substance that causes the symptoms of a disease in healthy people will cure similar symptoms in sick people. Homeopathy is generally considered a pseudoscience.
