One of the Botchan Ressha trains at Dogo Onsen Station, Matsuyama, Shikoku island, Japan. These dinky little trains are diesel powered relicas of the original German-built coal-fueled steam trains that operated the first railway in Shikoku, which was basically a tram line in Matsuyama City. They are famous for their appearance in one of the best-known Japanese novels - Natsume Soseki's Botchan, published 1906 and set mostly in Matsuyama and Dogo Onsen. The originals were built by Krauss & Company, Munich, in 1888. They are of 0-4-0 type, and were replaced by electric trams in 1931. These diesel replacements began operating in 2001.They are operated by Iyo Railway (Iyo Tetsudo), a company that also operates train and bus services around Matsuyama.
