In the U.K. in the 19th century the allotment garden scheme came about to help relieve the hardship of the rural poor who had lost their land and jobs through the process of enclosure. Today, allotments are essentially community gardens where individuals can grow vegetables and fruit for non commercial use. Plots or parcels of land are cheap and growing encourages physical activity, good heath and self sufficiency.
