Image taken from 1872 revised version of 'A History of the Vegetable Kingdom' by William Rhind. Pub. Blackie & Son, Paternoster Row EC, London, Glasgow and Edinburgh. Believed to be out of copyright.... I am not sure if these are hand-tinted like the others in this book appear to be [the coloured inks seen in following plates do not always precisely follow black edges, and occasionally a small ink smear appears. Both of which suggest hand-tinting. The colours for this plate appear very exactly placed and precise, and I wonder if this was actually a true colour separation-type quality piece kept specially for the frontispiece].... Pages throughout this book have marked 'foxing' [the yellowing or orange tint of old paper] around the three main page edges while the binding/spine side had discoloration. Really badly foxed areas have been re-built with cleaner areas while some desaturation in the yellow and orange channels has been used. The worst surface blemishes [tears] & ink spatter are removed... While the image in its current state may be useful in cases where a historical context requires an aged appearance. For other uses I feel that flood-filling the background white may be better, while working with PS using copy & paste in layer masks [as you might with copying fine hair, ] and using selection tools with carefully chosen edge detection and edge refinement settings.
