Socialist realism is a teleologically-oriented style having as its purpose the furtherance of the goals of socialism and communism. Although related, it should not be confused with Social realism, a type of art that realistically depicts subjects of social concern.

Soviet hammer and sickle emblem dominates the American flag in distance. The accordion-pleated extensions of Soviet Union USSR into Eastern Europe and Asia magnify the effect. This map 'is typical of many anti-communist maps that appeared in national news journals around 1950. These maps used a north polar projection because seeing the northern latitudes emphasized the closeness of the USSR Soviet Union to the United States.
